Organic clothing has slowly become the popular clothing choice for environmentally-conscious babies. Most parents have joined in, believing that non-organic or traditional clothes-mainly because of the chemicals used in the manufacturing process-are too risky for their drool monster (ehm, angel).
Because the clothing industry continues to use chemicals in production, chances are the clothes you find will never be 100% chemical free, even after several washes. So what does this mean for your kid? Having close and constant exposure to harmful chemicals that are easily absorbed by your child’s skin—is nothing to take lightly. The potentiality for skin allergies among other health problems, by something that as a society we don’t really even pay attention to—is pretty scary in my opinion.
That said, organic clothing is the safest option available to you right now. Not only does it keep your baby safe, but it can also help you play an important role in conserving the environment.
Here’s another awesome tidbit: The clothes made from organic fibers today are not shapeless tees or scratchy bottoms, like the ones from the 1970’s. You can find adorable tees, charming little bodysuits, and even cute bedding, so going organic will keep your baby looking like the endearing drool monsters they are, while staying at better distance from toxic chemicals.
You can begin by checking out organic bedding and basic baby accessories, like blankets and bibs, and then eventually move on to organic clothing made from untreated materials, like organic wool, cotton or linen. A little extra attention to things that your baby has more physical contact with than anything else, will only be beneficial.
